Things I learned today:

  1. You can solve a problem by using the same tactics that caused the problem in the first place because fighting fire with fire is super logical(not really).
  2. My job is like a season of Survivor(alliances and all) but the person that apparently everyone wants cast off the island has permanent immunity. Office politics suck so bad.
  3. Cordiality is overrated.
  4. Laziness is not.
Maybe I'm taking everything too seriously.

They See it, We Live it.

I feel as if I haven't updated in the longest time, but it turns out that it's only been around 2 weeks or so. Time flies? I've been super busy with school, work, and everything else. It's exhausting but I'd rather have something to do than nothing at all. I thrive in chaos.

Did anyone else catch the State of the Union Address? I did! One major thing that stood out to me was his acknowledgment of first generation college students. Now, maybe I'm being overly sensitive but was it me or was the applause after that statement a bit...sparse?

I'm going to try to word this without it reading as a cliche scholarship essay but the topic of first generation college students(even high school graduates) is something that I have strong opinions about. Mainly because I am a first-generation college student.

Yes it's tougher for us to gain admission to institutions of high learning due to lack of resources and familial support. Yes it's more difficult for us to remain in those institutions of higher learning because we more than likely have other obligations than our counterparts.

Now, I'm not victimizing 1st-gens because there are many of us who are doing extremely well in school and paving the way for others to succeed as well. However, I am spreading awareness to show that we have more disadvantages to overcome. Whether it be lack of information provided due to not being "in the know", lack of funds, family obligations, working insane hours just to get by(ahem, "building character") while everyone else travels abroad and can afford to do free internships, and unfortunately alienation from peers and family members for even being in college. Even while in college, some still have to work against those challenges, so my point is...doesn't that deserve a standing ovation? They gave many that night, so I'm sure this topic is worthy of one.

From a 1st-gen to my fellow 1st-gens, keep excelling. Never take your chance at a better life for granted and despite the lack of recognition that we may receive at times...never think that you aren't as capable as the next student because of your circumstances. Take pride in the fact that you've accomplished your goals due to merit, hard work, and dedication. I won't lie, it probably will get tougher as we progress further into our education, but at the end I'm sure that it'll all be worth it.

...It'd better be.

Oh, he got game...

Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King Jr.
And, no, I won't spend my day off sleeping. I'll be productive in my pursuit of gaining my 2 degrees rather than putting everything that he worked for to crap. Will you do the same?

Good Hair

This Project 365 thing is tough. I can only think of so many "thoughtful" and "deep" things to shoot in macro mode at a time. I'm not feeling very abstract/artsy today. Meh. One thing I do know is that I won't be posting them on the blog anymore, I've chosen Flickr instead. So rather than posting an entire photo for each entry, I'll just post the link. :)

I did catch Good Hair on HBO today. Yes, I'm really late, but better late than never, right? It's an excellent documentary about the culture and stigmas of African American women and our crown and glory--hair. Ice-T had several quotables, but we won't go there. One that really stuck out to me was a man's statement that women average 40 different hair products. Another woman cosigned him stating that she just liked to try everything out to improve her hair.

All right then.

Putting a gazillion things on your hair won't make it grow/thicker, but hey...whatever works for you.

I love defying stereotypes, so I went into my bathroom closet and lo and behold, I, Courtney Sierra, do not own anywhere near 40 different hair products. It's more like 12 really. My mom on the other hand...

Which watch?

Just answer. :)

I solemnly swear I'm up to no good.

Day 4: Motherf---in' Microbiology

School doesn't start until next week but I bought the packet of notes for my microbio class only to find out that the first four chapters are missing. Why are they missing, you ask? The department head, author of the textbook, and my instructor(before I wised up and switched out of his section at the last minute), skipped over them.
SO, I'm outlining the chapters myself just in case my new instructor chooses to skip over them as well. In addition to that, I also like to read ahead of what I'm going to be learning in class anyway. Call me what you want but in a semester, I'll be on the Dean's List. I'm still salty about my GPA last semester...

In other news, I sunk back into my old ways and started serial flirting again. I doubt that I'll have the energy to do that everyday but it definitely was amusing! Fun times...

There's an app for that!

Day 2: iPhone vs. BlackBerry Part 3498439832

So, apparently there's a "glitch" with the Apple iPhone software that causes us lovely iPhone users not to have an alarm to wake up to in the morning(unless you set it as "reoccurring", but that's annoying). Lucky for me, I still have my 9700 and will be using it as an alarm clock.

Because ever since the iPhone's alarm stopped working, BlackBerry phones have be noted to have the best alarms EVER.

Really though, I'll just download an alarm clock app and move on with my life.
